Dalam rangka peningkatan jumlah kunjungan wisatawan mancanegara khususnya dari kawasan Eropa, Kementerian Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif Republik Indonesia melakukan kegiatan promosi antara lain berpartisipasi dalam bursa pariwisata international yang diselenggarakan di luar negeri.
Dari beberapa bursa pariwisata berskala international yang berlangsung secara rutin di luar negeri, Vakantiebeurs merupakan bursa pariwisata yang bersifat trade and consumer tahunan terbesar di Belanda yang merupakan salah satu negara pasar utama pariwisata Indonesia. Ke depan kedudukan pasar Belanda diharapkan terus meningkat.
Belanda juga merupakan hub Indonesia dengan negara-negara di Eropa lainnya, disamping itu Belanda mempunyai ikatan historis dengan Indonesia dimana banyak dari warga negara Belanda yang mempunyai hubungan kerabat atau berasal dari Indonesia, pernah bertugas di Indonesia, atau mempunyai ketertarikan khusus untuk belajar mengenai Indonesia.
Wisatawan asal Belanda yang berkunjung ke Indonesia mengalami fluktuasi dari tahun ke tahun. Tahun 2010 wisman asal Belanda yang datang ke Indonesia sebanyak 158.957 atau meningkat sekitar 2,5% jika dibandingkan tahun 2009 yang 154.932 pengunjung. Hal ini bisa terjadi karena beberapa faktor. Salah satunya adalah belum secara kontinyu dilakukan promosi pariwisata ke Belanda dengan berpartisipasi pada bursa pariwisata di Belanda.
